Introduction to Music

The Introduction to Music Night was held in the K-2 hall on Wednesday 13 September and attracted a very large audience including many newcomers.

PHPS Intermediate Band (ICB) under Deb Muir’s baton swiftly kicked off the night with their great performance, the String Band lead by violinist James Gastineau-Hills showcased a variety of string instruments and their talented players, school’s outstanding music teacher Ms Stevens inspired many to join the choir program and then the Senior Band (SCB) dived into a complex and well-prepared theme of Star Wars. The band director Dave Odams showcased advanced players of Jazz Band (a sub-group of SCB) in a true funky fashion and then individual band instruments were skillfully demonstrated by SCB and Jazz Band players. The director himself showed why every long-armed boy and girl should want to become a trombone player. Judging from the long queues of future players that immediately formed at each instrument trial place, the evening was an outstanding success. Directors Dave and Deb deserve a huge credit for the bands’ performances, the music program leaders – Ms Stevens (choirs), Dayan McLeod (string), and Dolina Hall (bands), need to be congratulated for their hard work in keeping the music programs running. A very special thank you should also go to all the parents who offered their time and help to prepare and make the Music Night happen.

Senior Band (SCB) under the baton of Dave Odams shone again on Saturday 16 September during the Music by Moonlight concert at Normanhurst West. The exceptional effort of the director and all band players paid off and the SCB delivered a beautiful and polished performance featuring a difficult but well-played repertoire. Well done, congratulations to all. It was a great experience for all band students.
